This course builds on the skills acquired in Intermediate Latin I. You read longer, more difficult texts and train basic methods of classical philology and literary criticism, e.g., metrical and stylistic analysis, textual criticism, use of scholarly commentaries and dictionaries, recognizing levels of style and characteristic generic features.

Learning Outcomes

  1. At the end of the course you will have enhanced and made ample use of your availability to read considerable amounts of original language fluently, independently and in a well-informed manner
  2. For visitors who take a course in this form for the first time: You will train your ability to learn actively, in a self-directed manner (i.e. self-organization, awareness of own needs; ability to ask questions, to pinpoint problems and realize wether something has been understood or not) and to use the ancient language independently
  3. Having understood what kinds of issues are addressed by scholarship in Classics, you will begin to practice some of its methods yourself, especially the use of a scholarly commentary (in contrast to a mere reading aid for beginners) and textual criticism
  4. If poetry is being read: you will be introduced to metrical analysis or, if you have already begun this at the previous level, expand your knowledge and get to know new metrical forms
  5. If your main discipline and research interests are suitable, you will make interdisciplinary connections between the study of Latin and the discipline of your major
  6. You will consider more in-depth and more comprehensively aspects of our shared cultural and linguistic inheritance stemming from the ancient culture and their reception, including critical reflection on and comparison of ancient and modern concepts, values and cultural practices
  7. You will engage, more in-depth than at the Intermediate level I, with methods of Classics, classical philology, historical source criticism, or literary criticism, as they are required for your chosen project. For this purpose you will enlarge the range of methods you are able to use and, by your scholarly secondary readings, begin to join the critical reflection on those methods within the field
  8. You will further refine your grammar knowledge and build a sizable passive vocabulary
  9. You will learn how to assume responsibility for the correctness of your understanding, so that you become able to conduct wider ranging and independent research at the next level of Advanced studies
  10. You will practice and build a terminology for more sophisticated analysis and appreciation of individual styles, generic features and literary or poetic language
